5 Pest Control Myths: Busted!

Most of us have fallen victim to a popular urban myth once or twice, like that lightning never strikes in the same place twice, or that humans only use 10% of their brains. It’s common to believe what you hear, especially if you think it’s coming from a reputable source. So we decided to debunk several popular myths about pest control that simply aren’t true. Read on to find out more!

1. Pests don't like a clean house

The truth is, anyone can fall victim to a pest infestation. While keeping your home tidy can help detract certain pests from taking up residence by limiting their hiding places, it won’t completely prevent it.

2. If you don’t see pests, you don’t have a problem

There are many silent pests that could possibly be taking up residence in your home or business, including termites and ants. While you may not see any actual critters around, it doesn’t mean they’re not there!

3. A bug zapper will keep mosquitoes at bay

In reality, a bug zapper will do more harm to helpful insects like moths than it will help keep mosquitoes away. Mosquitoes are attracted to body heat and the CO2 coming from your breath, so they won’t be drawn to the glowing light of the bug zapper.

4. Pests die off in the winter

While this is certainly true for some pests such as most hornets and wasps, there are still plenty that linger throughout the cold winter months. Mice, for instance will be looking for a warm, dry shelter, and some species of ticks will remain active as long as the temperatures are above freezing.

5. “Bug Bombs” will eliminate bed bugs

If only it were that simple. Bed bugs utilize their flat bodies to hide in the smallest crevices, like under baseboards and inside vents. A bug bomb is such a broad treatment that the chemical usually does not reach those small hiding spots. The only proven solution is regular treatment by a licensed pest control company.
