Five Pest Control Tips for Detached Storage Units

It can be really frustrating when you realize you have pests in your storage unit. You may be asking yourself where they’re coming from or why they thought it necessary to bed down at your place. But don’t panic, because we hear you and you’re not alone. That’s why we’ve put together a list of five pest control tips for your detached storage unit.

“Clutter Be Gone!”

The worst possible thing you can do is have a cluttered or messy storage unit. Keeping things clean on the inside of your storage unit improves the possibility of you spotting issues that may arise not only with the unit itself, but also where critters are concerned. Store items inside of your unit in airtight containers if and when possible. This reduces the chance of damage to the items you have in storage, as well as keeps them fresh and clean. It’s also easier to find things in storage if everything is labeled and in boxes.

Declutter the area outside of your storage unit as well, if at all possible. Get rid of any piles of wood, debris, leaves, etc. If the pests don’t have a place to hide, they’ll go somewhere else.

Know What You’re Getting

We’ve all done our shopping and found some great deals on used furniture, right? There’s few things in the world better than landing on a $3 couch at a yard sale and getting to bring it home. But are we sure we know what we’re bringing into our homes and potentially moving into a storage unit for later?

It’s very important before we purchase or bring anything home with us to check it for pests.

Bedbugs are a common pest that burrow down into mattresses, chairs, beds and more.

There are a few ways to check for bedbugs. If you see small dark spots, or signs of a recent shedding, these could be warning signs of a bedbug infestation. Getting rid of these pests can be difficult, so consider your options before purchasing. Also remember that bedbugs, though they don’t carry any dangerous diseases, will spread from one location to another. If they get into your storage unit, they’ll spread to everything they come in contact with. Be careful!

Preventing Possible Infestations

In addition to being certain you’re not getting more than you paid for; (such as bedbugs or other pests) it’s important to follow some basic rules about preventing possible infestations within your detached storage building or buildings.

Like we mentioned above, keeping things in airtight containers is a great preventive measure you can take to keep pests out of your clothes or other personal items. If you plan on spraying bug spray around cracks or around doors or windows, your items will not absorb the chemicals or smell, either.  Awesome, right?  It can be a good idea to go the extra mile and get watertight boxes as well as them being airtight. This way, if you have any leaks or other issues with your detached storage building, you won’t have to worry about anything in the inside being damaged.

“Take It On Out Of Here!”

One of the most important steps in preventing pests in your storage unit is being sure to never leave trash or food items out around your storage unit. Dispose of your garbage and check around your storage unit regularly to be certain  that there isn’t any debris around that might attract unwanted guests.

“Bye, Bugs!”

Hiring a pest control company to come out and spray regularly is a wise step to take when it comes to eliminating pests in your storage building. Consider also having someone come out and inspect your storage building regularly, as this can reduce the chance of infestation.

Now that the pests are gone, you can relax and enjoy your outdoor storage building. No longer do you have to worry about pests getting in and making trouble. A nice feeling, right? We hear you. Hope you enjoy!
