Protect Your Home from Pests This Fall

Autumn weather is here, and that means many pests will begin to search for warmth and shelter to wait out the cold winter months. With a little bit of time and some elbow grease, you can prepare your home for fall and protect against these seasonal invaders.

One of the key approaches to pest management is prevention, which means stopping the pest before they can even make it inside. Follow these tips to pest-proof your home and enjoy a warm, cozy winter without any unwanted house guests!

Types of Fall Pests

While many pests are naturally eliminated after the first frost, there are a number of critters that survive the winter. One way they do so is by finding food and shelter to make it through the coldest months. They have an instinct to search for shelter once the shorter days and cold nights return. These pests can include flies, stink bugs, ants, spiders, roaches, mice, rats and other large rodents such as chipmunks and squirrels.

Prevention Tips

  1. Do an inspection of your home, checking the outside of the structure for holes, cracks, gaps or crevices that could allow entry. A mouse can enter a hole as small as a pencil, and ants and other insects can get through even smaller holes. If any are found, fill them with steel wool and caulking, or cement if necessary.
  2. Check all window and door screens for holes. Replace screens if needed. Replace weather stripping on a regular basis to maintain a tight seal against the environment as well as pests.
  3. Check your chimney or other pipes on the outside of the home for holes around the flashing. Place screens over any openings or vents.
  4. Clean out any debris from gutters, move leaf piles, keep shrubs trimmed and the lawn mowed. By eliminating the available habitat for common pests, you minimize the chances of them entering your home. They will look for the closest source of shelter, so if that is not near your home then they will go elsewhere!
  5. As for inside your home, make sure that all food sources are kept in sealed containers and check all faucets to correct any drips or leaks. If there is no readily available source of food and water, there is a good chance any pests that do make it inside will move along quickly.
