Experts have identified Southeast Texas – particularly the Houston area – as ground zero for a wave of bed bug infestations. Worse, this strain of bed bugs appears to be resistant to heat and chemicals – two common solutions to eliminate them from a home. Experts fear this could be a sign of a new “super” bed bug strain that could plague homeowners across Texas, and even nationwide.
Although more vulnerable to traditional extermination methods, so-called “regular” bed bugs already present a problem. According to one expert, if you find a single bed bug in your bedroom and ignore the problem for six months, you’ll wind up with over 31,000 bed bugs – and that’s not even counting the ones that make their way into other rooms and begin reproducing there. In fact, bed bugs can survive in the seams of your bed, sofa, carpeting, and even cracks in your walls. By the time you notice there’s a problem – usually, when you develop a rash or irritation from bed bug bites – the infestation has gotten out of control.
Although they harbor a host of pathogens in their saliva, bed bugs haven’t been found to actually pass those pathogens on to humans. However, their bites can cause rashes in most of the population, and severe allergic reactions in sensitive people.
The newfound resistance of “super” bed bugs is a concern for many pest control experts. In the past five to seven years, the U.S. has seen a resurgence in bed bug cases, and as more and more of the bed bugs prove harder to eliminate, experts worry that soon the “super” bug strain will stop responding to treatments altogether.
That’s why it’s so important to contact a trusted pest control service at the first sign of a bed bug. Bed bugs can enter your home in a number of ways, including clinging to luggage and clothing if you’re exposed while on a trip. These pests are becoming a huge problem in hotels, airports, and even movie theaters, where they’re transported and left to multiply until they can catch a ride with you and bring the problem to your home.
We believe Connecticut is especially susceptible to new strains of bed bugs. Nearby New York City ranks as one of the top bed bug cities in the country and New Jersey has been dealing with bed bug infestations in a number of apartment complexes. With the number of people moving between these areas, the Tri-State area is a prime location for superbug migration.
Be vigilant. Check hotels for signs of bed bugs, check items when you return home, and scan your living spaces as well. You’ll often find evidence in the seams or zipper area of your mattress and sofa, as well as the space where your carpeting meets the wall. Look for live bed bugs, rusty, reddish spots from bed bugs being crushed, tiny translucent yellow eggs and eggshells, and bed bug feces, usually about the size of an asterisk.
