German Cockroach

Identification

Adult German cockroaches are recognized by their light brown to tan coloring with two dark, almost parallel stripes, located on their backs. Female German cockroaches tend to be darker than males. German cockroach nymphs are dark brown to black in color with the same dark stripes located on their backs. While German cockroaches have wings, they rarely fly. Instead, they prefer to run. They are about ½ to ⅝ inches long and are found throughout the U.S.

BIOLOGY

German cockroaches have been proven to cause illness and allergic reactions in many people. Cockroaches have been reported to spread at least 33 kinds of bacteria, six kinds of parasitic worms and at least seven other kinds of human pathogens. Medical studies have shown that German cockroaches cause allergic reactions and can exacerbate asthma attacks, especially in children.

German Cockroach

HABITS

German cockroaches show a preference for warm and humid places. They are commonly found in residential and commercial kitchens and bathrooms. However, an infestation can occur in any area where people eat and drink. In homes, this includes dining rooms, living rooms and bedrooms.  Any crack or crevice located near a source of food or water can be a hideout for cockroaches. They can fit through an opening as small as ⅜  inch in width.

German cockroaches often find their way into new structures by hitchhiking on grocery bags, cardboard boxes, drink cartons and secondhand appliances such as refrigerators, televisions, microwaves, etc. They have been observed to migrate from building to building on warm evenings. Although uncommon, they can survive outdoors during the warm months. German cockroaches will feed on almost anything with nutritional value including all kinds of food, as well as soap, glue and toothpaste.

CONTROL

Having a clean and sanitary home is the best way to prevent an infestation of German cockroaches. Homeowners should consistently keep all surfaces, sinks, and floors free of clutter and crumbs. Don’t allow dirty dishes to pile up in the sink or let spilled foods sit on the counter. It’s also recommended to store food in sealed airtight containers, and avoid leaving pet food out. Some additional ways to prevent German cockroaches include vacuuming at least once a week to remove crumbs, installing dehumidifiers in crawl spaces and basements to prevent moisture build-up, and running water periodically in spare bathrooms to keep u-traps filled.
